Fringe Theology, Nephilim, And The TNIV

If J.J. Abrams’ new show FRINGE deals with what is known as “fringe science,” then I suppose it is fair to say that Chuck Missler, among his many other interests, includes explorations of what can be called “fringe theology.”

Missler is the one who first introduced me to the idea that the Bible could be setting up a prescendent for our modern notion of “aliens” in the book of Genesis.

Alien abduction stories (just watch an episode of “The X-Files”) often involve an abductee (usually a human female) being abducted by aliens and being experiemented on, involving their reproductive organs. These abuctees claim they have knowledge of an alien plan to create a hybrid human-alien species.

Missler suggests (of course, he always adds, “I could be wrong about this”), that if these accounts are true, then the Bible has a way of explaining these events.

Let’s take a look at Genesis 6:1-4 (NIV):

When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

The traditional interpretation that was given to me growing up in church has been that the “sons of God” here referr to the godly descendents of Seth (the son of Adam, who was born to replace Abel), while the “daughters of men” represented the ungodly dscendents of Cain (who slew Abel his brother).

But, the problem with this interpretation, according to Missler, is that in the book of Job the same phrase “sons of God” clearly refer to the angelic beings.

Missler says that if we’re consistent with the way we identify the “sons of God” in Genesis 6 with the way we identify the “sons of God” in Job (the underlying Hebrew is the same, B’nai HaElohim, in both books) the real picture that emerges from Genesis 6 is that the “sons of God” are angels who decided to betray their post, and took by force, human women and ended up breeding hybrid children with them–the Nephilim.

Where does this go?

If this is true, then, from a genetic standpoint, it makes sense why Golaith and his brothers had to be destoryed, as well as the inhabitants of the pagan nations that the Israelites displaced.

Why would these angels-gone-bad do this? Just for kicks, for physical pleasure?

Missler surmises that it may have been part of Satan’s plan to try to thwart the comming of the Messiah. If Satan could corrupt the DNA of the human race by introducing a demonic hybrid race, the Messiah–“the seed of the woman”–could never arrive.

Of course Satan was unsuccessful.

In updating the NIV, the translators renders the word “men” into more contemporary usage and renders it “human beings” in Genesis 6. So that, Missler’s “fringe” interpretation now becomes more readily appearent.

Take a look at Genesis 6:1-4 (TNIV):
